It may make little to no difference at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the other hand, if you are engaged in printing graphics products and desktop publishing, or are an advanced amateur or professional photographer routinely correcting RAW and JPEG images, calibrating your monitor should be a top priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Like any other skill, digital photography requires mastery of certain tools. Sure, it starts with your digital camera, but so much of the \u201cmagic\u201d happens after downloading the images to your computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Learning to calibrate your monitor is probably the single most important component of your professional color correction workflow. If calibration is not done correctly, your monitor will only frustrate you and result in costly mistakes and wasted time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Of course, you can process, adjust, modify, and crop the image in Lightroom or PhotoShop, without a properly calibrated monitor. But, that is a lot like trying to bake a cake without having measuring cups, a timer, or a temperature setting on your oven. There is no reliable way to know what you will get!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>What if My New Monitor Comes Pre-Calibrated?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can not assume your shiny brand-new monitor is perfectly calibrated for your workflow and computer. Even the very best models will still need to be calibrated to properly display images in the specific environment in which they will be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>What Difference Does That Make?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The color quality and amount of light present at your workstation will determine the optimum brightness setting of the display. The entire calibration process depends on this critical first assessment and adjustment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">OK, How Do I Calibrate my Monitor?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although you can achieve a close \u201cgeneral purpose\u201d calibration with the file at the bottom of this article and a hardcopy print we can provide, the best way to calibrate your monitor is by using a sensor and software profiling kit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Affordable monitor profiling kits, such as the Datacolor \u201cSPYDER\u201d (<em>or similar unit<\/em>) will save you many times their initial cost in lost time, money, and frustration. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>Can I Calibrate My Laptop Computer Display?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While a few high-end laptop models like the Macbook Pro may work fine, most portable displays can be problematic due to their lack of screen adjustment controls which are often required during calibration setup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Additionally, because of their portable nature, laptop, and tablet screens will generally display different brightness levels for power conservation purposes, depending on an environment\u2019s ambient brightness and whether battery or AC power is in use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Disable the \u201cauto-brightness-adjustment\u201d in the device control panel if you can. It is also essential that you ONLY use the device for image correction when it is AC-powered. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Alternatively, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an AC-powered desktop external monitor will provide the most reliable results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This YouTube tutorial from Datacolor demonstrates how to calibrate your monitor with the <strong>Spyder Pro:<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We recommend that you visually confirm the accuracy of your calibrated monitor to a sample print made on one of our devices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Download the \u201cCalibration Target File\u201d (below), and we can supply you with a \u201cCalibration Target Print\u201d which will enable you to calibrate your monitor so that you may reliably \u201csoft-proof\u201d your own images.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>Can I Calibrate Without a Probe and Software?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>The most reliable calibration is achieved using a commercially available calibration tool like the Spyder Pro to set up your monitor. If this is unavailable, you can achieve a \u201climited\u201d calibration by manually adjusting your screen to match the provided sample print.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The following procedure assumes that you will be using some version of Adobe PhotoShop but can be adapted to similar image editing programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Launch Photoshop (or a similar program) and open the \u201cTarget Print File\u201d you downloaded from the bottom of this page to your computer.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>While visually comparing the screen and the reference print, \u201cfine-tune\u201d your monitor screen controls (contrast, red, green, and blue) to match the reference print. The print must be viewed under an ambient light source that is close to a \u201cdaylight\u201d color balance.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Once the print &amp; monitor comparison is in close agreement, send us one of your corrected files for test printing. Once you receive the new print, compare it to the screen image and \u201cfine-tune\u201d the screen again as necessary. The images may not EXACTLY match, but they should closely approximate each other. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Once this evaluation has been completed and the screen and reference are in close agreement, any prints we make for you in the future should be a reasonably close match to your screen.<\/i><\/span><em>This monitor calibration Target Print File can be downloaded and saved to your device. <em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">We offer a printed copy of this file, free of charge, that has been produced without any correction.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>First, click on the image and a new window will open, then \u201cright-click\u201d on the full-res image and select the \u201cSave Image As\u201d option in the pull-down menu.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Specify the location where you want to save the \u201cTarget Print File\u201d and click \u201cSave\u201d.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Once you have this image saved on your device, open it with a program like PhotoShop. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">When you compare this photo with the image on your monitor, you can visually determine how close the two samples match.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>This will confirm how well your screen is calibrated.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Do I Need To Calibrate My Monitor?
